I Am the Best Boyfriend for Myself

What does solitude look like?

It looks like bluish gray fog in the early evening outside,

And a pink lightbulb in an empty bedroom inside.

It looks like a 6-year old cat slowly blinking at you only one time.

What does solitude taste like?

It tastes like a cup of black tea with vanilla soy milk,

Like the paper of a brown napkin right after you wipe your lips.

It tastes and smells like the rose-scented incense stick that burns in it’s holder,

and you feel the smoke on your tongue when you inhale.

What does solitude sound like?

It sounds like early morning news, but you tune it out into white noise.

It sounds like the movie you’ve seen at least 20 times on DVD, even though if someone asked you, you wouldn’t call it your favorite.

What does solitude look like?

It looks like a nubby worn sweater

And feels like one, too.

It also feels like the humid, awkward breeze while taking a walk

in the middle of the day in a Southern neighborhood.

It feels like the sun on your neck when you’re trying to decide how much further you want to go before you turn back home,

or if instead you want to keep naming the different shades of green you see in the grass and the trees.

It feels like the introverted, sad exhilaration of deciding not to go out after all.

When you feel free because you’ve chosen to be lonely.

Solitude is contentedness with being your own companion, and loving others from a distance.

It is greedy and pure

Indulgent and pious

It is liberation from your body, the sweat and weight of it all,

Inside your mind.
